InnoDexis has published its latest Innovation Intelligence Report covering unmanned systems and counter-UAS, analyzing 262 screened innovation records — 140 research records spanning September 2025 through September 2026 and 122 corporate records from 17 March through 8 September 2026 — across 21 countries and 84 research institutions. The report reveals that counter-UAS and air defence is the largest single technology category at 28.6 percent of the corpus, exceeding the entire platform stack, and that the corporate mean InnoDexis score of 6.26 is the highest recorded in any cross-stream edition this year.

Key Findings

Counter-UAS and air defence accounts for 75 of 262 records, ahead of autonomy and swarming at 13.4 percent and airframes at 10.7 percent. Every disclosed contract award above $100 million in the corpus is counter-side, including a $490 million Air Force programme naming Echodyne's commercial radar as its sensing element and a $180 million BAE Systems contract for an advanced air defence system.

Motorola Solutions' $1.5 billion acquisition of counter-drone specialist D-Fend is the largest disclosed transaction in the corpus, and the buyer is a communications company rather than a defence prime — evidence that counter-UAS demand has extended into civil infrastructure such as airports, stadiums and prisons.

The maturity profile is decisive: 68 of 121 scored corporate records sit at TRL 8 or 9, and only 12 fall below TRL 5. Product launches score highest of any announcement type at 7.05, ahead of contract awards at 6.93, inverting the pattern seen across other InnoDexis sectors because a launch here typically represents a fielded system entering an active procurement pipeline.

Small and mid-size firms dominate the corporate stream: 48 mid-size corporates, 25 SMEs and 16 startups account for 89 of 121 records against just 16 large corporates. Ten disclosed contract awards total roughly $730 million at a median of $6.4 million, describing many small, fast awards rather than a few large programmes of record.

Autonomy research has moved from the aircraft to the formation. Thirty-five records address multi-agent coordination and swarming, led by MIT with nine records, while the industrial base itself has become a technology category: 20 records treat sovereign production, NDAA compliance and domestic manufacturing as the subject rather than the background.

Strategic Insight and Trend Analysis

The defining structural finding is that a corpus assembled to study drones is predominantly about stopping them. Counter-UAS and air defence exceeds the combined platform stack of autonomy, airframes, effects, and ground and undersea systems, and the maturity data confirms this is not aspirational: fielded radars, acquired RF-defeat systems and contracted interceptors sit at the commercial centre of the field while much of the platform-side research remains at the coordination-concept stage.

The corpus captures a race mid-stride. For corporates and R&D teams, capability is entering service through firms they do not currently own — 89 of 121 corporate records are mid-size, SME or startup against 16 for large corporates — and three capability areas are acquirable now: commercial radar for detection, radio-frequency defeat following the D-Fend consolidation, and infrared and electro-optical components already in repeat production.

For investors and capital allocators, disclosed venture funding cannot support a sizing thesis at just two disclosed rounds across 262 records; procurement signal is the stronger indicator, with every disclosed award above $100 million counter-side and follow-on orders outperforming TRL and partnership claims as the strongest available maturity evidence.

For policymakers and national innovation bodies, the industrial base is now the clearest signal in the corpus: 20 records treat sovereign production and supply-chain compliance as the subject, and countries without NDAA-compliant or equivalent domestic sources are excluded from allied markets regardless of technical quality, while airspace regulation for civil counter-UAS deployment remains thin against a $1.5 billion acquisition explicitly targeting that market.
