Chirality Innovation Shifts to Devices as 29 Studies Outnumber 15 on Asymmetric Catalysis While Eight Bench Methods Reach 94–99.9% Selectivity
An analysis of 77 in-scope chirality studies finds that selectivity has commoditised, with only 1 of 13 synthesis studies naming an open problem citing scale-up, while the two in-scope companies, Codexis and AiFChem, sell scale and supply rather than selectivity.

InnoDexis has published its latest Innovation Intelligence Report covering chirality and asymmetric synthesis in the Nobel 2026 series, analyzing 81 unique research studies from 59 institutions in 11 countries between 6 January and 9 October 2026, alongside five corporate announcements from 15 May to 1 October 2026. The report reveals that the field publishes selectivity and sells scale: eight bench methods report enantioselectivity of 94 percent or better, yet the two in-scope companies compete on manufacturing capacity, and chirality as a device property now outnumbers chirality as a chemistry problem.
Key Findings
The device half of chirality has overtaken the synthesis half. Twenty-nine in-scope studies address chiral emitters, photonics and switchable spin or phonon devices against 15 on asymmetric catalysis, and the switchable-chirality thread published 2.4 studies a month after 1 July against 1.3 before it. Japan supplies 24 of 77 studies, including 7 of 13 emitter studies.
Bench selectivity is settled, and base metals carry it. Eight methods report 94 to 99.9 percent enantiomeric excess or enantiospecificity, including 99 percent at Chiba University and Institute of Science Tokyo, and nickel, iron or copper appears in 7 of 8 metal-catalysed methods, with rhodium, iridium and ruthenium named only as the metals being replaced.
The process gap is unaddressed. Only 1 of 13 synthesis studies that name an open problem names scale-up and 2 name catalyst recycling, while Manchester’s evolved enzyme reaches 98 percent conversion and more than 99 percent ee for the lenacapavir core and Fraunhofer IMM’s flow route reaches more than 99.9 percent ee.
Engineered enzymes are the only execution race. Three commercial actors, Codexis, Prozomix and ZhenSheng Biotech, act against six studies, and Codexis, the only High-momentum corporate record at InnoDexis score 8, demonstrated stereocontrolled siRNA synthesis on its ECO Synthesis platform.
Money is public and small. Identified chirality funding totals about €3.0 million in grants, including more than €2 million from VolkswagenStiftung to a CISS-in-photosynthesis consortium, and no private capital, licence or transaction value is disclosed in either stream.
Strategic Insight and Trend Analysis
The defining structural finding is that the field has finished one job and started another without connecting the two. Making one mirror image of a molecule selectively is done at the bench, with cheap metals and engineered enzymes, while using handedness as a switchable state in devices and as a property of light is underway mainly in Japan and Germany. Between them sits the work neither stream does much in public: turning selective reactions into processes and chiral effects into products. Seven of 16 switchable-chirality studies remain at concept stage, and stated gaps are manufacturing problems, scale-up in 7 of 14, integration and stability in 5 each.
Chirality has acquired a handle. Nine studies set handedness from outside by electric field, gate voltage, strain, current, magnetic field, solvent, MEMS actuator or metal ion, including a 3 V room-temperature phonon chirality switch at the Paul Scherrer Institute, and six of the nine appeared after 1 July. A property with a handle can store a bit, which moves the buyer from a pharmaceutical process group to memory, sensor and photonics manufacturers.
Commerce is present but quiet. Six industrial counterparties appear only inside research records, Pfizer, Bristol Myers Squibb, Prozomix, ZhenSheng Biotech and two Samsung foundations, and verified research-to-corporate convergence is zero. Forty-two of 77 studies record a collaboration, yet none bridges the research and corporate streams. Chirality-induced spin selectivity ties four threads together, appearing in ten studies, with Yossi Paltiel of the Hebrew University named on four.
Global and Industry Implications
For corporates and R&D teams, pharmaceutical process groups should audit every asymmetric step that uses rhodium, iridium, ruthenium or palladium against the 2026 nickel, iron and copper methods, and engage Manchester and Prozomix on the lenacapavir aminotransferase route for chiral amine cores. Memory and sensor groups can take a research option with PSI, Institute of Science Tokyo or the University of Osaka.
For investors and capital allocators, the field is un-priced, with no disclosed venture round, licence or transaction value, so entry points are process-development capacity, enzyme supply and device options rather than selectivity. Pfizer’s collaboration with Scripps validates that big pharma is testing the method, Codexis customer announcements are the category’s price signal, and engineered enzymes carry the highest late-entry risk.
For policymakers and national innovation bodies, Japan supplies 24 of 77 studies with no Japanese company in either stream, and 28 of 77 studies name a government funder. Germany has no corporate record in the dataset, and Fraunhofer IMM is the only institution whose chirality result is already a continuous manufacturing process. A new KAKENHI or NSFC programme with chirality in its title would signal public money concentrating.
InnoDexis Statement
“The academic field competes on a number that has stopped differentiating, while every company in the record competes on scale and supply — the next value in chirality is process, not selectivity,” noted InnoDexis in its latest intelligence report.
Conclusion
As the corporate stream returned only five records, two in scope, every commercial finding is a count within this extract, and companies may announce chiral work without the vocabulary that retrieved these records. The signals to watch are whether Codexis names a commercial siRNA customer, whether Prozomix lists a lenacapavir-type aminotransferase, whether a second electronics company funds chiral spin, phonon or circularly polarised work, and whether a switchable-chirality result reports endurance data. The complete Chirality and Asymmetric Synthesis Report October 2026 is available to InnoDexis subscribers and enterprise clients.
