AI-Designed Molecules Draw 90% of US$2,441M in Private Funding Into Small-Molecule Chemistry While 46% of US$955M in Public Awards Funds Validation and AI-Ready Data

A cross-stream analysis of 280 research and 107 corporate records finds that generative design is the only contested technique, 75 research mentions against 74 corporate, while Insilico Medicine’s rentosertib has entered Phase III and buyers pay upfronts of just 1.2 to 2.7 percent of headline deal value.

AI-Designed Molecules Draw 90% of US$2,441M in Private Funding Into Small-Molecule Chemistry While 46% of US$955M in Public Awards Funds Validation and AI-Ready Data

InnoDexis has published its latest Innovation Intelligence Report covering AI-designed molecules, protein and drug design, analyzing 280 research records from 169 institutions in 21 countries between 1 October 2025 and 23 October 2026, and 107 corporate records from 91 companies between 14 April and 23 October 2026. The report reveals that the industry is buying the design step while the public builds the thing that makes design work: 90 percent of disclosed private funding goes to small-molecule chemistry, and 46 percent of public awards funds validation and AI-ready data.

Key Findings

Private money is concentrated and public money funds validation. Of US$2,441M in disclosed private rounds, US$2,206M, 90 percent, goes to small-molecule chemistry and US$2,100M of that is one round, Isomorphic Labs, while US$436M of US$955M in public awards, 46 percent, funds validation and AI-ready data against US$106M for generative chemistry.

Generative design is the only contested technique. It has 75 research and 74 corporate mentions, a convergence index of 0.50, while protein language models run 55 research to 10 corporate, structure prediction 36 to 3 and microbiome and antimicrobial discovery 30 to 2.

AI-designed molecules have reached patients. Insilico Medicine has dosed the first patient in GENESIS-IPF-3, a Phase III trial of rentosertib across 47 centres, Nutshell Therapeutics took NTS231 from target nomination to FDA IND clearance in 24 months, and 22 corporate records name a molecule at a named stage, ten of them Insilico’s.

Buyers pay small upfronts for design platforms. insitro received US$40M against up to US$1.46 billion from AstraZeneca, 2.7 percent, and XtalPi US$70M against up to US$5.99 billion from DoveTree, 1.2 percent, while momentum follows asset gates, with regulatory approvals rated High 100 percent of the time and clinical trials 71 percent against 33 percent for ordinary partnerships.

Antibody design is the one technique where commerce leads research, 13 corporate against 11 research, while research outnumbers corporate records in enzyme design, 25 against 10, and in AI-ready datasets, 70 against 13.

Strategic Insight and Trend Analysis

The defining structural finding is that validation data, not model architecture, is the scarce input. Private capital concentrates on the step that produces a molecule, while public money concentrates on the step that tells you whether the molecule is any good, and a design engine without proprietary validation data is a service, not an asset. Model quality is converging, with Insilico and Liquid AI reporting a 2.6-billion-parameter model beating one more than ten times larger on 13 of 22 tasks, and Insilico reports 12 to 18 months to a preclinical candidate against an industry average of 4.5 years.

Validation has become an industry. ADME-One from Ginkgo Datapoints, Tangible Scientific and Inductive Bio, Sino Biological’s XPressMAX protein synthesis in three hours at over 99 percent success, Parse Biosciences’ 300 million single-cell profiles and Ambitious Bio’s Corpus are products with price points, while Northwestern’s cloud laboratory targets 300,000 proteins and Stowers 10 billion aggregation measurements.

Structure prediction is now infrastructure. Its share of research fell 8.7 points between halves and no corporate record sells it as a primary product, so the exploitable gaps are quality and currency, such as St. Jude’s finding that 3 percent of human protein structures are outdated, and specificity, such as ion binding and dynamics. The corporate window starts on 14 April, so no corporate trend over time is claimed, and one company dominates the asset register.

Global and Industry Implications

For corporates and R&D teams, particularly pharma, pay more upfront for access to validated data and cycle time rather than distant milestones, test a partner’s models on your own chemistry, and contract validation capacity now, including Sino Biological, ADME-One and Parse Biosciences. Consortium access through Toronto’s Acceleration Consortium, with more than 60 partners, and the NSF cloud-laboratory test beds buys target biology cheaply, and embedded distribution, such as Inductive Bio’s models inside Benchling, is the cheapest route to market.

For investors and capital allocators, price platforms on validated-data ownership and cycle time rather than model claims, and look to the open positions: protein language models, antimicrobial discovery, genomic models and drug repurposing. Due diligence should ask what proprietary validation data a company owns, whether the asset or only the engine is owned, and how its cycle time compares with Insilico and Nutshell.

For policymakers and national innovation bodies, public money already dominates the validation layer, so access terms set now will decide whether it creates a competitive market or subsidises incumbents. Biosecurity is almost absent from the research stream, Northwestern’s facility-level biosafety review is the only operational model, and no company claims a standard for validating AI-designed molecules.

InnoDexis Statement

“The industry is buying the design step while the public builds what makes design work — validation data, not model architecture, is the scarce input,” noted InnoDexis in its latest intelligence report.

Conclusion

Because the corporate stream covers only 14 April to 23 October 2026, no corporate trend over time is claimed, and the asset register rests heavily on one company, the findings are cross-sectional. The signals to watch are whether GENESIS-IPF-3 reads out, whether Isomorphic Labs names a clinical candidate, whether upfront shares in AI design deals rise above about 5 percent, and whether a funded company enters antimicrobial AI design.
