A first-edition analysis of 1,904 research records finds that long-term evidence is the single most stated gap at 27.6 percent, that mechanistic gaps mark early-stage work in 227 of 264 cases, and that research proposes self-fundable studies five and a half times as often as the capital-intensive steps deployment requires.

InnoDexis has published its latest Innovation Intelligence Report covering research gaps and the future-studies agenda, analyzing 1,904 validated research records during the 1–30 August 2026 observation window. The first edition of this report inverts the standard instrument of innovation intelligence: instead of aggregating what has been achieved, it aggregates 9,116 discrete forward-looking statements — 2,893 research gaps, 2,999 proposed studies, 2,380 scientific challenges, and 844 partner needs — written by the researchers themselves. The report reveals that what a field admits it does not know is a more reliable indicator of where it stands than anything it claims to have achieved.
Key Findings
Gap type is a maturity diagnostic. Records stating a mechanistic gap sit at Low readiness in 227 of 264 cases, while durability gaps appear at every maturity level, reaching High readiness in 109 cases. Twenty-two records claim High readiness while stating a mechanistic gap — the most useful red flag the corpus produces.
Long-term and longitudinal evidence is the most frequently stated gap, appearing in 506 records — 27.6 percent of gap-stating records — and 1,124 records state a gap that no amount of engineering will close. The most common thing global research says it lacks is time, not capability.
The scale-up blind spot is clear: only 91 records name manufacturability as a gap, 63 propose scale-up work, and 44 propose an economic evaluation, while corporate scale-up records score 5.72 against a corporate mean of 4.91. The question that determines whether findings reach use is the one research asks least.
The proposed agenda sorts into three tiers: 848 records propose studies a laboratory can run alone, 575 propose studies needing a partner or facility, and 154 propose capital-intensive steps — scale-up, larger trials, economic evaluation. Just 51 records in the month propose a larger randomised or multicentre study.
Germany states research gaps in 629 records against the United States' 580, from a research stream roughly a third smaller — the third consecutive German asymmetry in this series. Long-term durability is named by 469 research records and addressed by 145 corporate ones, while real-world field validation is the only theme where research demand exceeds corporate supply.

This corpus inverts the standard reading order of innovation intelligence. The three preceding reports in the August series found corporate announcement volume abundant and uninformative at the margin; the research stream is the opposite, with forward-looking fields populated above 96 percent and content specific enough to act on. For 37.5 percent of the month's global research output, the dataset holds a complete brief — the question, the obstacle, the method, and the missing party — written by the researchers themselves.
The maturity diagnostic is the edition's central instrument. Mechanism, quantification, and translation gaps mark early-stage work almost without exception, while a durability gap cannot be closed by insight or funding, only by elapsed time. A field that does not know why something works is early wherever else it claims to be; a field that does not know how long something lasts may be fully commercial and simply waiting. Gap density falls only 16 percent from Low to High readiness — maturity changes the kind of open question, not the number.
The gap-to-market map turns the patterns into positions. Integration, interoperability, and regulatory pathway are named by roughly a hundred research records each and addressed by thousands of corporate ones — saturated. Long-term durability is structurally open: 469 research records name it, 145 corporate records address it, and those score below the corporate mean. Real-world field validation is scarce, valuable, and explicitly asked for — 86 gaps against 66 corporate records scoring 6.03.
Global and Industry Implications
For corporates and R&D teams, the gap corpus is a competitive instrument: a research gap statement is a public and specific account of what a technology cannot yet do. An organisation that can generate credible long-term durability evidence holds a differentiator hundreds of research records say is missing, and the 22 records claiming High readiness while stating a mechanistic gap are the sharpest red flag for assessing competitor claims.
For investors and capital allocators, the triage takes two questions and no technical expertise: what kind of gap does the source state, and what does it propose next. A Tier 3 proposal — scale-up, a larger trial, an economic evaluation — indicates a team that has thought about deployment, and the 91 records naming scale-up as their own gap are, by definition, teams who know what they need.
For policymakers and national innovation bodies, the 848-to-154 tier ratio is a measurable characterisation of the translation problem, and baseline data scarcity — named in 144 records — is a direct statement of where public data infrastructure is missing.
